Hamzah Sheeraz Overcomes Austin Williams in Dramatic 10th Round Stoppage in Riyadh

British Middleweight contender Hamzah Sheeraz showcased his resilience and skill with a stunning 10th-round stoppage victory over Austin "Ammo" Williams on Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 

Sheeraz entered the ring with high stakes. Promoter Frank Warren had dubbed him "the next Tommy Hearns," Sheeraz was already in line for a world title shot thanks to his mandatory position in the WBO middleweight rankings. A loss in this WBC eliminator would have jeopardized his title aspirations and tarnished Warren's high praise.

The tension was palpable in the second round when Williams landed a powerful right hand that wobbled Sheeraz, causing Eddie Hearn to leap to his feet and exclaim that Sheeraz was "gone." Despite this early scare, Sheeraz's subsequent performance vindicated Warren's faith in him and showcased his exceptional talent.

Southpaw Williams, boasting a 16-0 record with 11 knockouts, had faced more formidable opponents than Sheeraz, with notable victories over Steve Rolls and Kieron Conway. These experiences had given the Houston native a taste of near-world-class competition, although he sometimes struggled to make a lasting impression.

From the outset, Sheeraz's physical advantages were apparent. His size and reach posed immediate challenges for Williams, despite Williams' confident start, hands raised high. Sheeraz's powerful left lead quickly established his superiority, suggesting that Queensberry Promotions, already buoyed by victories from Willy Hutchinson and Nick Ball, was set to extend its winning streak further.

However, Williams turned the tide in the second round with a well-placed straight right hand, causing a visible shift in momentum. Sheeraz's imposing frame momentarily lost its intimidation factor as Williams followed up with another powerful shot, making Sheeraz appear vulnerable.

The bout's early pattern was established, with Sheeraz regaining control in the third round. He rocked Williams with precise straight shots, making the American's legs appear unsteady again. The see-saw battle continued, with both fighters landing significant blows while exposing themselves to counterattacks.

By the sixth round, Sheeraz began to dominate more consistently. His jab, thrown with precision and control, kept Williams at bay. Sheeraz's movement and distance management forced Williams to throw punches from too far out, diminishing their effectiveness.

Sheeraz's uppercuts on the inside became increasingly effective in the seventh and eighth rounds. Despite his early success, Williams found himself on the brink of collapse multiple times. However, Williams demonstrated remarkable courage, continuing to fight back with two-fisted barrages.

The climax came in the 10th round. At 2:50, Sheeraz dropped Williams heavily with a lead right hook. Although Williams beat the count, his situation worsened in the 11th round. A powerful left from Sheeraz sent him stumbling across the ring, followed by a right hand that nearly floored him again. A final body shot sealed the deal, prompting the referee to intervene at 0:45 of the round, stopping the fight as Williams, bleeding but courageous, was driven towards the corner.

Reflecting on the fight, Sheeraz acknowledged his opponent's toughness, stating, "At the back of my mind, I knew it wasn't going to be a wipeout victory. He's a muscular lad, and we knew we had to break him down on the inside. I was throwing the uppercut. My corner was saying the right hook, Frank was telling me the right hook and, boom, I slipped it over and he was gone."

This victory solidified Sheeraz's position as a top middleweight contender and validated Frank Warren's high expectations.
