In a fight that showcased the culmination of resilience and redemption, Daniel Dubois exorcised his past demons by overpowering Filip Hrgovic in eight punishing rounds on Saturday night. This triumph marks a significant comeback for the 26-year-old, who was once dismissed as a quitter.

Dubois, now holding a 21-2 record with 20 KOs, had shown glimpses of his potential with a victory over Jarrell Miller in December, despite facing some adversity in the middle rounds before securing a tenth-round stoppage. However, scepticism about his mental fortitude persisted, rooted in his 2020 defeat to Joe Joyce and an apparent surrender against Oleksandr Usyk last August. Added to this was a shaky performance against Kevin Lerena, making Hrgovic, who had reportedly dominated a young Dubois in sparring, the favourite.

Hrgovic, entering the fight with a 17-1 record (14 KOs), was seen as a significant threat, though there were murmurs about his stagnation in the professional ranks. Dubois, often irked by reminders of his past setbacks during the build-up, entered the ring with something to prove. From the opening bell, he sought a knockout, absorbing numerous right hands from Hrgovic without retreating while landing powerful shots.

Reflecting on the fight, Dubois said, “I ate those shots and they just woke me up. Then I was on it. It was like, ‘Don’t wait, don’t wait.’”
The first round set a relentless pace, and the second continued in a similar fashion. Hrgovic seemed to gain an edge until the last minute when Dubois’ jab began to find its mark. A right hand from Dubois opened a cut on Hrgovic, who appeared visibly shaken by the round’s end.

Dubois’ forward march was relentless, and his ability to absorb punches without flinching was striking. Although Hrgovic landed more punches, Dubois’ persistence and power began to tell. By the fifth round, Dubois’ aggressive approach had Hrgovic looking weary, though the Croatian landed several solid shots of his own.

The fight’s dynamic shifted in the sixth round as Dubois’ confidence grew. Round seven saw Dubois landing brutal shots with alarming frequency. Hrgovic’s face bore the brunt of the assault, with blood streaming from multiple cuts. Dubois’ punches landed with the force of an axe, each blow adding to Hrgovic’s troubles.

The eighth round proved decisive despite Hrgovic’s resistance and instinctive fighting spirit. Dubois, in full command, unleashed a barrage of punches that prompted the referee to call in the doctor, leading to the fight’s stoppage. Dubois’ victory was emphatic, marking the standout performance of the night.

“I come from rock bottom, and now I’m back on top,” Dubois declared after the fight. “I’ve heard the next opponent is Anthony Joshua – bring it on. This is my time.”

This bout had the IBF interim heavyweight title on the line just two weeks after Oleksandr Usyk defended his unified titles against Tyson Fury in a historic clash. The IBF’s decision on Usyk’s request to delay his mandatory defence in favour of a rematch with Fury is still pending.

Dubois’ win over Hrgovic revitalised his career and re-established him as a formidable force in the heavyweight division. The victory silenced doubters and set the stage for potentially monumental matchups shortly.
