Vic Darchinyan vs Jorge Arce

On February 7, 2009, the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, played host to a super flyweight superfight between unified champion Vic Darchinyan and WBA interim titleholder Jorge Arce. The bout, promoted by Top Rank and Gary Shaw Productions, saw Darchinyan put his WBC, WBA, and IBF world titles on the line against the battle-tested Mexican warrior.

Darchinyan, coming off a spectacular knockout victory over Christian Mijares just three months prior, entered the ring with a record of 31-1-1 (25 KOs). The Armenian-born Australian southpaw wasted no time asserting his dominance, rocking Arce with powerful shots in the opening round. The onslaught continued in the second, with Darchinyan's unorthodox style and heavy hands keeping Arce on the defensive.

The tide briefly turned in the third round when Arce, sporting a 51-4-1 (39 KOs) record, managed to land some clean shots that drew blood from Darchinyan. However, the champion regained control in the fourth, wobbling Arce in the final minute. As the fight progressed, Darchinyan's superior firepower began to take its toll on the Mexican challenger. Arce showed tremendous heart but was visibly worn down by the eighth round, which saw Darchinyan dominate the action.

The end came in the eleventh round when Darchinyan opened a cut over Arce's right eye. With Arce's vision compromised and having absorbed significant punishment, the ringside physician advised referee Lou Moret to halt the contest after the round concluded. At the time of the stoppage, all three judges - Raul Caiz Jr, Marty Denkin, and Pat Russell - had identical scores of 109-100 in favour of Darchinyan.

In his post-fight comments, Darchinyan expressed surprise at Arce's toughness, stating, "He was tough. He is a good fighter. I hit him with some good shots, but he kept coming back." The victory solidified Darchinyan's position as the premier super flyweight in the world, while Arce would go on to capture world titles in multiple weight classes. However, Darchinyan's next outing would see him move up to bantamweight, where he unsuccessfully challenged Joseph Agbeko for the IBF crown.
