Three months before meeting Jorge Arce, Australian based Armenian Vic Darchinyan had unified the WBC, WBA, and IBF World Super-flyweight titles by knocking out Mexican Christian Mijares in 9 rounds at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Darchinyan (31-1-1) now got the chance to solidify his position by facing Arce, the former Light-flyweight world titleholder in a much-anticipated match.
In an all-action battle, Darchinyan always seemed to have the edge in power although Arce also had his moments. But in the 11th round, the Mexican picked up a bad cut to his right eye that badly hampered his vision. When he got a second cut, the writing was on the wall and his corner pulled him out of the fight at the end of the round.
Arce would go on to become a four-weight world champion. Darchinyan lost his next fight while challenging New York-based Ghanian Joseph Agbeko for the IBF World Bantamweight crown.
