Barney Ross, the reigning champion, faced off against Pete Nebo in a contest that would further cement Ross's status as one of the era's premier fighters. Ross, who had captured both the lightweight and junior welterweight titles from Tony Canzoneri in Chicago just seven months prior, was making his third defence of the junior welterweight crown. His previous defences had been successful outings against Sammy Fuller and Peter Nebo, ending in decision victories.
