Having won both the world lightweight and junior-lightweight titles from Tony Canzoneri in June 1933, Barney Ross then defended his junior-lightweight title against Johnny Farr and then both titles in a rematch with Canzoneri. He then relinquished the lightweight crown and defended the junior-lightweight belt against Sammy Fuller.
Next up in the fourth defence was Pete Nebo from Key West, Florida by way of Cuba at the Convention Hall in Kansas City, Missouri. Ross won by unanimous decision.
