The fight
On February 7, 2009, Omar Andres Narvaez successfully defended his WBO World Flyweight title for the fifteenth time against undefeated American challenger Rayonta Whitfield at the Nuevo Palacio Aurinegro in Puerto Madryn, Argentina. The bout, promoted by O.R. Promotions and televised on TyC Sports, saw the 33-year-old Narvaez (28-0-2) face off against the 29-year-old Whitfield (22-0-0) in a clash of unbeaten fighters.
Narvaez, who had held the title since July 13, 2002, when he defeated Adonis Rivas, entered the ring as the slight favourite. However, Whitfield, who had earned his shot by winning a WBO eliminator against Manuel Vargas, proved to be a formidable opponent. In the fourth round, the challenger caused some concern for Narvaez, opening a cut by the side of the champion's left eye.
The fight took a controversial turn as Whitfield was penalized twice for low blows, losing points in both the seventh and ninth rounds. These deductions would ultimately prove costly for the American challenger. In the ninth round, both fighters engaged in a wild exchange, standing toe-to-toe and trading punches, much to the delight of the Argentine crowd.
As the bout entered the tenth round, Whitfield began to show signs of fatigue. Sensing his opponent's vulnerability, Narvaez increased his offensive output. The champion's relentless attack proved too much for Whitfield, prompting referee Samuel Viruet to intervene and stop the fight at the 0:50 mark of the round. With this TKO victory, Narvaez retained his WBO World Flyweight title and extended his unbeaten record to 29-0-2.
This successful defence further solidified Narvaez's status as one of his era's most dominant flyweight champions. The Argentine would go on to make one more defence of his flyweight title before moving up to super flyweight in 2010, where he would capture the WBO World Super Flyweight title and continue his impressive championship reign.
