The March 14, 2015, unification bout at Montreal's Bell Centre marked Sergey Kovalev's most challenging professional contest, culminating in an eighth-round TKO victory over Jean Pascal. The fight combined Kovalev's WBO (fifth defence), IBF and WBA Super titles with Pascal's WBC Diamond belt. However, Pascal's pre-fight decision not to participate in the WBC's elimination process meant only Kovalev could claim mandatory challenger status to Adonis Stevenson's WBC championship.

The bout's intensity established early fight-of-the-year credentials. Kovalev's third-round right hand achieved a historic first, dropping Pascal for the first time in his career. However, Pascal's resilience and power forced Kovalev into unfamiliar territory, particularly in round five, where CompuBox recorded Pascal landing 12 of 20 power shots.

At the stoppage, all three judges (Davies, Ramos, and Enyedi) had identical 68-64 scorecards favouring Kovalev. The final sequence came at 1:03 of round eight when referee Luis Pabon halted the contest after Kovalev landed two clean right hands, following a brief interruption when Kovalev slipped on the canvas.

CompuBox statistics revealed Kovalev's volume and Pascal's accuracy: Kovalev landed 122 of 471 punches (26%), while Pascal connected with 68 of 200 (34%). The victory improved Kovalev's record to 27-0-1 with 24 knockouts, marking his first time fighting beyond seven rounds since 2010.

The stoppage proved controversial, with Pascal, viewing himself as the "Rocky" underdog, protesting while still coherent and watching Kovalev's punches. The drama was heightened by Pascal's young daughter Angel being temporarily removed from ringside during the intense third round.

The fight's aftermath centred on potential matchups: Pascal demanded a rematch, a mandatory defence against undercard winner Nadjib Mohammedi, and speculation about a unification bout with ringside observer Adonis Stevenson, who had previously withdrawn from negotiations with Kovalev in 2014.
