Despite the pre-fight anticipation that suggested a contentious battle, Rocky Marciano demonstrated his undeniable dominance in the ring against Roland LaStarza during their rematch on September 24, 1953. Defending his World Heavyweight Title for the second time, Marciano stepped into the Polo Grounds in New York City with an impressive record of 44-0-0, while LaStarza entered with a formidable record of his own, 53-3-0. Presented by the International Boxing Club, and refereed by Ruby Goldstein, the bout was aired on theater television to enthusiastic audiences across the country.

Being the betting favorite, Marciano was expected to deliver a decisive victory. Early in the match, however, LaStarza demonstrated solid tactics, skillfully dodging Marciano's aggressive charges and repeatedly clinching when the champion got too close. Nevertheless, the odds tilted dramatically in Marciano's favor as the bout progressed into the middle rounds. LaStarza's early finesse began to deteriorate under the relentless pressure and heavy blows from Marciano, who managed to significantly weaken LaStarza's defense by repeatedly targeting his arms.

Round 10 was particularly punishing for LaStarza, who bore the brunt of Marciano's relentless attack. Suffering from severe facial cuts and spitting blood, the challenger from the Bronx found himself on the back foot, steadily losing his grip on the match. The penultimate round saw a brutal left-right combination from Marciano, throwing LaStarza out of the ring. Demonstrating immense grit, LaStarza managed to beat the count, only to face a ruthless onslaught from Marciano.

Referee Goldstein deemed it prudent to call the match in the 11th round, crowning Marciano the victor by technical knockout (TKO). This marked Marciano's 40th knockout victory and the first instance of LaStarza being stopped in a match. "He's a great fighter," LaStarza acknowledged after the bout. "He's definitely a better fighter than when I fought him before—5,000 percent better."

The fight was recognized as Fight of the Year by The Ring magazine. An estimated crowd of 44,562 spectators at the Polo Grounds contributed to a gate worth $435,817, while audiences in 45 theaters across 34 American cities witnessed the match on theater television. With a guaranteed 42½ percent of all revenues, Marciano ended up with approximately $185,000. LaStarza, receiving 17½ percent, took home about $65,000
