Despite being considered a slight betting favorite in his first world title fight, Marciano was put to the test early on, as a sharp left hook from Walcott floored him in the opening round. This marked the first time in his 43-fight professional career that Marciano had been knocked down. Marciano managed to rise at the count of four, illustrating the resilience that had come to define his boxing style. The battle continued to ebb and flow, with both boxers demonstrating moments of dominance.

Throughout the fight, Walcott, who was making the second defense of his world heavyweight title, skillfully used his reach and superior boxing skills to keep the challenger at bay. He employed a strategy of effective counterpunching and meticulously picking his shots, maintaining a comfortable lead over Marciano. Marciano, undeterred, kept the pressure high, seeking to close the distance and wear down the champion with his relentless aggression.

After twelve rounds, Walcott was ahead on all three official scorecards. Two judges had him leading 8-4 and 7-5 respectively, and referee Charley Daggert had Walcott ahead 7-4. As the 13th round began, it seemed that Walcott was well-positioned to retain his title. However, heavyweight boxing is known for its unpredictable nature, and this fight was no exception.

Less than a minute into the 13th round, the dynamics of the fight dramatically shifted. Marciano, with a resounding right hook, connected with Walcott's jaw, interrupting Walcott's own right-hand punch. Walcott fell to the canvas, knocked out cold by Marciano's decisive blow. Marciano celebrated as he was declared the winner by knockout.

The fight was named "The Ring Fight of the Year" for its intensity and high-level boxing. The decisive 13th round was also recognized as "The Ring Round of the Year." In 1996, this remarkable showdown was named the 16th Greatest Title Fight of All-Time by The Ring.

With this victory, Rocky Marciano, known as the "The Brockton Blockbuster", became the new heavyweight champion of the world, improving his impressive record to 43-0. This defeat added another loss to Jersey Joe Walcott's record, taking it to 49-19-1. Despite the loss, Walcott's strong performance against Marciano confirmed his status as a formidable champion in his own right.
