On February 20, 1976, Muhammad Ali defended his WBA heavyweight title against Belgian challenger Jean-Pierre Coopman at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Promoted by Don King Productions and broadcast via closed-circuit television, the bout was widely viewed as little more than a formality for Ali, who was heavily favoured against the relatively unknown Coopman.

Ali entered the ring with a record of 49 wins and 2 losses and weighed 226 pounds. Coopman, with a record of 24 wins and 3 losses, weighed 206 pounds. While Coopman was known for his bravery and durability, few expected him to pose a legitimate threat to the reigning champion.

The two fighters' gap in skill and experience was glaringly evident from the opening bell. Even at a heavier weight, Ali displayed his trademark movement, sharp jab, and ring generalship. Coopman pressed forward gamely, attempting to close the distance, but his lack of speed and precision made it challenging to land clean shots on the champion.

Ali controlled the tempo from the outset, using his jab to keep Coopman at bay while landing occasional right hands to remind the challenger of the firepower he possessed. Coopman showed admirable determination, but his offensive efforts were largely ineffective, as Ali effortlessly slipped his punches and responded with clean counters.

Ali began to showboat as the fight progressed, dropping his hands, pulling faces, and taunting Coopman. The challenger, while persistent, could do little to make Ali pay for his antics. By the fifth round, it became apparent that Coopman was out of his depth, and Ali began to turn up the pressure.
Ali delivered a sharp right hand in the fifth round that staggered Coopman. Sensing the end, Ali followed up with crisp punches, leaving the challenger's defenceless. The referee halted the contest, declaring Ali the winner by technical knockout.
The official time of the stoppage was 2:46 of the fifth round. Coopman, though outclassed, earned credit for his bravery and willingness to stand in front of one of the greatest heavyweights of all time.

In the post-fight interview, Ali was characteristically confident. He dismissed Coopman as a worthy challenger while praising his toughness. "He was brave, but he was never going to beat me," Ali remarked.

For Coopman, the fight was the pinnacle of his career, a chance to share the ring with a legend. Though he fell short, he left with his head held high, knowing he had done his best against an opponent operating on an entirely different level.

The fight was not one of Ali's most memorable defences, but it served its purpose. It was another successful title defence in a period where Ali was balancing showmanship with his role as the reigning heavyweight champion.
