Spain based Uruguayan Evangelista was ranked #8 by the WBA and #10 by the WBC but was viewed as an easy defence for the champion after his struggle with Ken Norton eight months earlier.

Ali won a 15 round unanimous decision in the 9th defence of his WBC & WBA world heavyweight titles.
