On June 15, 1987, Michael Spinks and Gerry Cooney faced off at the Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in a fight billed as a clash between the lineal World Heavyweight Champion and a once-feared contender. Spinks, stripped of his IBF heavyweight title earlier that year for declining to face Tony Tucker, opted instead to fight Cooney for a significantly larger purse. While not universally sanctioned as a world title bout, the fight was recognized as such by 18 states and The Ring Magazine.

Despite being the reigning lineal champion, he was listed as an 8-to-5 underdog against Cooney, a hard-hitting heavyweight who had fought only sporadically since his loss to Larry Holmes in 1982.
