Michael Spinks

Michael Spinks, affectionately known as "Jinx," is a legendary figure in the boxing world, renowned for his exceptional skill, versatility, and historic achievements. Born on July 22, 1956, in St. Louis, Missouri, Spinks embarked on his professional boxing journey at age 20, making his debut on April 16, 1977, against Eddie Benson. This inaugural fight set the tone for his illustrious career, as he defeated Benson via a first-round TKO at the Arena in St. Louis.

Spinks' rise to prominence was swift and decisive. By 1981, he had already become a top-ranked contender, and on July 18 of that year, he challenged Eddie Mustafa Muhammad for the WBA light-heavyweight title in Las Vegas. Spinks' performance was impressive; he dropped Mustafa Muhammad in the 12th round and secured a 15-round unanimous decision victory, claiming his first world title.

This victory marked the beginning of Spinks' dominance in the light-heavyweight division. He defended his title multiple times, facing and defeating notable opponents such as Marvin Johnson, Vonzell Johnson, Murray Sutherland, and Dwight Muhammad Qawi. The fight against Qawi on March 18, 1983, was particularly poignant, as Spinks had recently lost his wife, Sandy Massey, in a car accident. Despite this personal tragedy, Spinks composed himself and delivered a masterful performance, winning via a 15-round unanimous decision to become the undisputed light-heavyweight world champion.

Spinks' career took a monumental turn on September 21, 1985, when he moved up to the heavyweight division to face the undefeated Larry Holmes. In a historic bout, Spinks outboxed Holmes over 15 rounds, securing a unanimous decision and claiming the IBF and Ring Magazine heavyweight titles. This victory made him the first reigning light-heavyweight champion to win a heavyweight title, a feat that cemented his legacy in boxing history.

Spinks' reign as a heavyweight champion included successful defences against Steffen Tangstad and a rematch against Larry Holmes, which he won via a 15-round split decision. However, his tenure was cut short when he was stripped of the IBF title for refusing to fight their mandatory challenger, Tony Tucker, and instead opting to face Gerry Cooney, whom he knocked out in five rounds.

The final chapter of Spinks's professional career was marked by a highly anticipated and ultimately tragic bout against Mike Tyson on June 27, 1988. Fighting at the Convention Hall in Atlantic City, Spinks suffered a devastating knockout in just 91 seconds, the only loss of his professional career. This defeat led to his retirement from boxing the following month.

Throughout his career, Spinks amassed an impressive record of 31 wins and 1 loss, with 21 of those wins coming via knockout. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994, a testament to his contributions and achievements in the sport.
