Michael Spinks vs Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Friday, March 18, 1983

The fight

On March 18, 1983, the Atlantic City Convention Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, hosted one of the most anticipated boxing matches of the era. Michael Spinks fought Dwight Muhammad Qawi in a bout billed as "The Brawl for it All." This fight was a unification match for the undisputed light heavyweight championship, with the WBA, WBC, The Ring, and lineal titles all on the line.

Michael Spinks, who had recently suffered a personal tragedy with the death of his 24-year-old girlfriend, Sandy Massey, in a car accident just two months prior, was emotionally charged but managed to maintain his composure. On the night of the fight, his two-year-old daughter, Michelle, unaware of her mother's passing, entered Spinks' locker room and asked when her mother would arrive to watch the fight, a moment that visibly moved Spinks but did not deter him.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi, known for his aggressive style, had previously defeated Matthew Saad Muhammad for the WBC light heavyweight title. On the other hand, Spinks held the WBA title after defeating Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. Both fighters had impressive records and had beaten several top contenders, generating significant interest and anticipation among boxing fans and experts.

The fight saw Spinks adopt a technical stance, utilizing his jab and footwork to evade Qawi's relentless attacks. In the early rounds, Spinks dominated, with judges and observers noting his superior performance. However, Qawi began to gain momentum in the middle rounds. A controversial moment occurred in the eighth round when Spinks fell. The first fall was ruled a slip, but the second fall counted as a knockdown after Qawi landed a punch as Spinks stepped on Qawi's foot.

Despite pneumonia, Qawi continued pressing forward, particularly in the later rounds. In the fourteenth round, he staggered Spinks with two strong rights but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity as the bell rang soon after. In the final round, Qawi launched a desperate assault, but Spinks effectively dodged and weaved, maintaining his distance and control.

The fight concluded unanimously in favour of Michael Spinks, with judges Tony Castellano, Tony Perez, and Frank Cappuccino scoring the bout 144–140, 144–141, and 144–141, respectively. The close decision sparked calls for a rematch, scheduled for September 27, 1984, but ultimately cancelled due to an  injury Qawi's suffered during training.

This victory solidified Spinks' position as the undisputed light heavyweight champion. It marked a significant milestone in his career, along with his historic win over Larry Holmes to become the first reigning light heavyweight champion to win the heavyweight title, the match against Qawi remains one of the historic fights of Spinks' career, especially as it was won in the face of personal tragedy.
