Larry Holmes made the 14th defence of his WBC world heavyweight title at The Watres Armory in his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania in front of a capacity crowd of 6,700. His challenger was Frenchman Lucien Rodriguez, the reigning European champion.
Holmes won a shutout unanimous decision in his first title defence over the new 12 round distance brought in by the WBC after the death of Duk Koo Kim in a title challenge to WBA world Lightweight champion Ray Mancini.

Holmes last fight in Scranton before Rodriguez was against Obie English on 16th August 1975. He did, however, have one more fight in Pennsylvania against Joe Gholston on 29th January 1976 at Kirby Field House in Easton where he had moved to.
