On Saturday 4th June 2005, Kostya Tszyu vs Ricky Hatton took place at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England. Promoted by Sports Network and featuring Tszyu defending his IBF World Super-lightweight Title for the fourth time, both fighters entered the ring with impressive records, Hatton boasting 38 wins and no losses, while Tszyu held 31 wins and only one loss.
Australian Tszyu weighed in at exactly 140 lbs and the local hero Hatton slightly lighter at 139¾ lbs. The match was broadcast live on Showtime and Sky Sports, with referee Dave Parris officiating the bout.
From the onset, both fighters gave everything they had, exchanging powerful blows throughout the early rounds. Hatton, known for his relentless aggression and high work rate, applied constant pressure on Tszyu, who relied on his technical prowess and experience to counter Hatton's attacks.
As the fight progressed, Hatton's tenacity and conditioning began to wear down Tszyu. Deep into the 10th round, the relentless chanting of "Ricky, Ricky, Ricky" from over 17,000 fans spurred Hatton on, as he continued to push the pace and overwhelm the defending champion.
Finally, at the end of the 11th round, Tszyu's corner made the decision to retire, giving Hatton a victory by retirement. This result marked a significant upset and catapulted Hatton into the boxing elite. Tszyu, who had been a dominant force in the sport and a national hero in Australia, gracefully accepted the loss.
