The fight

On June 22, 1949, at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois, Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott squared off in a 15-round contest for the vacant National Boxing Association World Heavyweight Championship.

The heavyweight championship had been left vacant following the retirement of the legendary Joe Louis, a figure whose shadow loomed large over the division. In a gesture that acknowledged the calibre of both fighters, Louis personally selected Charles and Walcott as the most deserving contenders for the crown. Thus, the stage was set for a clash to begin a new chapter in heavyweight boxing.

Ezzard Charles, weighing 182 pounds, was known for his technical prowess and boxing intellect. Jersey Joe Walcott, heavier at 196 pounds, brought a crafty style and devastating power to the ring. The contrast in styles and physical attributes made for a compelling matchup, drawing a crowd of 25,932 and generating receipts totalling $246,546.

The fight itself was a testament to the skill and determination of both men. Over 15 rounds, Charles and Walcott engaged in a tactical battle, with Charles using his speed and boxing ability to outmaneuver the powerful Walcott. Despite the weight disadvantage, Charles displayed remarkable resilience, effectively absorbing Walcott's heavy blows and countering.

The judges' scorecards reflected Charles' dominance, with referee Davy Miller scoring the bout 77-73 and judges Franklin Spike McAdams and Harold Marovitz both seeing it 78-72 in favor of Charles. The unanimous decision victory awarded Ezzard Charles the NBA World Heavyweight Championship, a title that the boxing community had eagerly awaited.

However, the recognition of Charles as the undisputed heavyweight champion took time. The New York State Athletic Commission, British Board of Boxing Control, European Boxing Union, and Ring Magazine initially refused to acknowledge the winner as the World Heavyweight Champion. It was when Charles defeated Joe Louis in September 1950, and following Louis' knockout victory over Lee Savold in June 1951, that Charles received universal recognition as the heavyweight champion.

Financially, the bout was significant for both fighters and the International Boxing Club, which promoted the event. Charles and Walcott each received 25 percent of the receipts, demonstrating the lucrative nature of heavyweight boxing and its appeal to audiences.

The rivalry between Charles and Walcott would not end with this fight. They would meet three more times with the world heavyweight title at stake, each bout adding to the legacy of their intense and competitive rivalry. These fights underscored the era's competitive spirit and the depth of talent in the heavyweight division.
