Carlos Monzon vs Tony Mundine

The October 5, 1974, WBA middleweight championship at Buenos Aires' Luna Park Stadium marked Carlos Monzon's tenth defence, facing Australia's Tony Mundine. Monzon (82-3-9) entered at 160 pounds against Mundine (47-3-1) at 159½, with referee Isaac Herrera officiating the Canal 13-televised bout promoted by Juan Carlos "Tito" Lectoure.

Mundine ranked number one after wins over Emile Griffith, Denny Moyer, and Antonio Aguilar, demonstrated early aggression by forcing Monzon to backpedal in the opening round. The momentum shifted in round two as both fighters engaged more directly, with Monzon's combinations buckling Mundine at the third round's close.

The champion's measured approach paid dividends in round six when he trapped Mundine with several combinations. Though Mundine managed to pin Monzon against the ropes multiple times, his punches lacked the impact to seriously trouble the champion. The end came at 1:30 of the seventh round when Monzon's sustained head attack left Mundine defenceless after being saved by the bell in previous rounds.

The victory extended Monzon's remarkable run since his last defeat in 1964, though his prediction of one more fight before retirement proved premature - he would defend four more times through 1977. For Mundine, despite his pre-fight confidence about his future "I'm still a pretty young bloke. I reckon I have a few years", this proved his only world title opportunity. He gained weight afterwards, eventually retiring in 1984, having held Australian titles in four weight divisions.
