At the division limit of 160 pounds, Hopkins faced the undefeated Lipsey, who came in at 158 pounds and was ranked as the #1 IBF middleweight contender. The fight began with Lipsey, a southpaw, presenting some early challenges for Hopkins. The champion's right eye started to swell in the second round, indicating that Lipsey was finding some success with his punches.

However, by the third round, Hopkins had begun to solve Lipsey's style, effectively counter-punching and establishing his rhythm. Judge Dalby Shirley had Hopkins ahead 30-27 at this point, reflecting the champion's growing control of the fight.

The decisive moment came at 2:50 of the fourth round. Hopkins landed a powerful right uppercut to Lipsey's jaw in the centre of the ring, leaving the challenger staggering. Seizing the opportunity, Hopkins unleashed a barrage of five more headshots, sending Lipsey flat on his back. Referee Mitch Halpern quickly intervened to stop the fight.

The knockout was dramatic enough to require immediate medical attention for Lipsey, who remained on his back for about a minute before getting to his feet. Concerningly, Lipsey went down to his knees again about five minutes later, though his corner attributed this to an asthma attack.

This victory improved Hopkins' record to 29-2-1 with 22 knockouts. It was a significant step up in competition and performance from his previous 24-second knockout of Steve Frank in January. The fight was part of the undercard for the Mike Tyson vs Frank Bruno WBC heavyweight title bout.

This fight marked the end of Joe Lipsey's professional boxing career, as he never fought again after this loss.
