Reasoning
Abdullah Mason was meant to be dealing with Joe Cordina, a tidy, experienced operator who would have brought a pedigree and proper amateur schooling. Instead, he gets Albert Bell, unbeaten, awkward, tall, rangy, and the sort of fighter who can make you look daft if you go steaming in like you’re fighting a punchbag. It’s a homecoming for Mason in Cleveland, world title on the line, fireworks weekend, all very pretty. But Bell has not become scenery.
Mason is the young gun, 20-0 with 17 knockouts, and there’s a reason people are excited. The kid can punch, but it’s not just whack. He gets his feet in position quickly, lets the left hand go sharp, and when he smells a dent in you, he doesn’t admire his work. He closes the shop. That’s a proper fighter’s instinct. The question is whether he stays patient when Bell starts nicking space and making it messy.
Bell is 28-0, but only 9 knockouts, so he’s not coming to blast Mason out. He’s coming to fiddle, frustrate, use those long levers, take half-steps back, spoil the rhythm, and nick rounds if Mason lets him. He’s got a reach like a hungry spider, and that can be horrible if you’re trying to get your work off clean. But here’s the rub: if Mason gets past that front door and makes Bell fight at mid-range, Bell will be in deep water.
The key for Mason is not to chase the head. Touch the body early, cut the ring, jab the chest, and make Bell’s legs do overtime. For Bell, it’s all about discipline. No hanging about on the ropes, no lazy exits, no admiring single jabs. He has to turn Mason, tie him up when needed, and make the young champion reset again and again.
I like Bell as a spoiler, and I think he’ll be awkward for four or five rounds. But Mason’s pressure, speed and spite will start telling. Once he shortens the distance and begins landing downstairs, Bell’s clever stuff won’t look so clever.
