Delante Johnson vs Christopher Guerrero

Delante “Tiger” Johnson comes home to Cleveland at 17-0 with 8 KOs, facing Christopher “Machine Gun” Guerrero, 16-0 with 9 KOs, over ten rounds at welterweight on the Mason-Cordina card at the Wolstein Center on July 4. Johnson has the Olympic background, the hometown crowd, and the cleaner boxing education. Guerrero has the nickname, the engine, and enough spite in his hands to make it uncomfortable if Johnson lets him get close.

Guerrero wants a phone box fight. Johnson’s jab is the key, not just as a scoring shot, but as a steering wheel. He has to keep Guerrero turning, touch him on the way in, and not let the fight become a straightener on the ropes. Guerrero’s best chance is to make it scruffy, keep his hands moving, and test whether Johnson can stay composed when there is claret in the air, and a man is putting punches around both sides of the guard. But pressure only works if your feet take you in safely. If Guerrero marches in square, Johnson will pick him off all night.

I am taking Delante Johnson by unanimous decision. Guerrero is unbeaten, strong, and game, so I do not see him being brushed aside early, but Johnson’s ring IQ, jab, height, reach, and amateur seasoning should take over once the early rush settles down. By the middle rounds, Johnson should be spearing him on the way in, stepping round, and making Guerrero pay for every lunge. The old-school advice for Johnson is this: do not get brave just because you are at home, be boring if boring wins. For Guerrero, close the gap with your head moving, not your chin in the air. If he cannot trap Johnson by round four, he is chasing shadows.
