Yuri Akui, the WBA flyweight champion, put on a masterful performance in his first title defence against a courageous but outmatched Taku Kuwahara at the Tokyo Dome. The 28-year-old champion, now 20-2-1 with 11 KOs, displayed his technical prowess and punching power throughout the 12-round contest.

Akui set the pace from the opening bell, landing a hard right hand that foreshadowed the challenges Kuwahara would face. Despite the challenger's efforts to counter with flashy combinations, Akui remained undeterred, walking Kuwahara down behind a tight guard and unleashing powerful shots to the head and body.

Akui's strength and imposing presence became more evident as the rounds progressed. He consistently found openings in Kuwahara's defence, landing crisp left hooks, right hands, and body shots. The champion's ability to block and counter Kuwahara's attacks further demonstrated his technical superiority.

Kuwahara, to his credit, showed tremendous heart and resilience. He had moments of success in the fifth and sixth rounds, catching Akui with a left hook and a right hand that earned a nod of respect from the champion. However, these moments were fleeting as Akui continued to apply relentless pressure.

By the seventh round, it became clear that Akui had more gears to shift through. He bullied Kuwahara around the ring, working both upstairs and downstairs, causing visible damage to the challenger's face. Kuwahara's defence began to falter, and he was increasingly on the receiving end of Akui's powerful right hands.

Despite the one-sided nature of the fight, Kuwahara refused to quit. He continued to circle the ring and fire back with combinations, even drawing a wry smile from Akui in the 11th round. However, the cumulative damage and Akui's consistent output took their toll on the challenger.

In the end, the judges' scorecards reflected Akui's dominance, with two judges scoring the fight 117-111 and one scoring it 118-110, all in favour of the champion. Referee Raul Caiz Jr. had little to do, as Akui's technical skill and ring generalship kept the fight clean and controlled.

Yuri Akui's impressive performance in his first title defence solidifies his position as a top talent in the flyweight division. With his only loss coming against Junto Nakatani in 2017, Akui has since rebounded and claimed the WBA title by outpointing Artem Dalakian in January.

Taku Kuwahara, the WBA's No. 3 contender, falls to 13-2 with 8 KOs. While he showed immense courage and determination, he was outgunned by the superior skills and power of the champion.

As Yuri Akui continues his reign as the WBA flyweight champion, boxing fans will eagerly anticipate his next challenge. With performances like this, Akui is sure to attract the attention of the division's best, setting the stage for exciting matchups in the future.
