Ted Cheeseman seems only to engage in wars against some really tough opposition, surely a fast way to a short career? James Metcalf was the latest to take the Bermondsey super-welterweight into deep waters in their British Title clash on the Whyte vs Povetkin undercard in Gibraltar. Cheeseman found a way to regain the title he lost in controversial circumstances to Scott Fitzgerald, but he needs to stick to his boxing a bit more if he wants to get more out of his career.

At 25-years-old, Cheeseman, who had a good amateur career, has shown glimpses of his obvious boxing abilities, but always turns his fights into all-out wars that take their toll.

Metcalf came to make it a war and after Cheesman ran up an early lead, Metcalf, the son of Shea Neary, came back in the middle rounds to turn things his way, but as the tempo slowed in the 10th, it was Cheeseman that landed the more telling blows, and in the 11th, a big left hook left Metcalf flat on his back. Referee Ian John-Lewis reached the count of ten after the bell had sounded to end the round. The official time of the stoppage was 3:10 of round 11.
