Fight Report
In a fight that will be remembered more for its final moments than its overall quality, Liverpool's Robbie Davies Jr (95-94) showcased his resilience as he navigated past former world champion Javier Fortuna at the SSE Arena in Belfast. The victory came despite a dramatic 10th-round knockdown that momentarily threatened to derail Davies's career trajectory.
The contest, plagued by untidy exchanges and clinch work, saw Davies's forward pressure and work rate ultimately trump Fortuna's more precise but sporadic offensive bursts. Fortuna, who missed weight for the contest, demonstrated his trademark left hand early, catching Davies cleanly in the opening two rounds as the fighters tumbled to the canvas during a messy first-round sequence.
Under the tutelage of former lightweight titlist Anthony Crolla, Davies made strategic decisions, maintaining consistent pressure through the middle rounds and even experimenting with a southpaw stance in the fifth. A cut appeared over his right eye in round six, but he continued to impose his physicality as Fortuna's output diminished.
The fight's complexion shifted dramatically in the final frame when Fortuna's left hand and subsequent uppercut sent Davies to the canvas. Though Davies protested the knockdown ruling, he was forced into survival mode for the remaining 45 seconds, his bloodied nose evidence of the late assault. His earlier work proved sufficient to secure the narrow margin of victory over Fortuna (38-4-1, 27 KOs).
