Peter McGrail Bounces Back with Dominant Victory over Marc Leach in Liverpool

Liverpool's own Peter McGrail (9-1, 5 KOs) returned to winning ways with a comprehensive unanimous decision victory against Marc Leach (18-4-1, 4 KOs) in the main event of Matchroom's NXTGEN bill at the Liverpool Olympia. The judges scored the bout 100-90, 99-91, and 99-91 in favour of McGrail, who claimed the WBA International Super Bantamweight title.

The amateur standout and Tokyo Olympian, who suffered a surprising knockout loss to Ja'Rico O'Quinn last December in Glendale, Arizona, was initially slated for a rematch against the American. However, O'Quinn withdrew from the fight, prompting Leach to step in as a replacement.

Despite the change in opponent and the pressure of headlining in his hometown following a defeat, McGrail rose to the occasion, showcasing his superior skills and relentless pressure throughout the ten-round contest. "Coming off a loss, it was important to win," McGrail said post-fight. “We have passed the test with flying colours against a tough opponent. He stayed in there, fair play to him.”

From the opening bell, McGrail took control of the fight, working behind a right hand to the body and cutting off the ring to corner Leach. The Liverpudlian's combinations, particularly his straight left to the head, consistently found their mark, while Leach struggled to mount an effective offence.

As the rounds progressed, McGrail's dominance became increasingly evident. His pressure never wavered, and his varied attack, which included eye-catching rights to the head and precise lefts to the body, left Leach with few answers. By the sixth round, Leach was visibly troubled, with swelling below his right eye.

Despite Leach's best efforts to survive the onslaught, McGrail maintained his high work rate and accuracy throughout the later rounds. A flashy combination in the final 40 seconds of the tenth round punctuated a near-perfect performance, although McGrail did suffer a cut above his right eye in the closing moments of the fight.

After the victory, McGrail called out O'Quinn, suggesting that the American had withdrawn from their rematch out of fear. "The word is that he [O'Quinn] pulled out due to family-personal matters," McGrail said. “But I reckon he s*** himself; he doesn't want to be in the ring with me.”

With this impressive win, Peter McGrail has successfully rebounded from his first professional defeat and reaffirmed his status as one of the most promising young fighters in the super bantamweight division. As he continues to develop his skills and gain experience, the Liverpool native will undoubtedly be eyeing bigger challenges and more significant titles in the near future.
