Brazilian sensation Beatriz "Beast" Ferreira captured the vacant IBF lightweight title with an impressive technical decision victory over Argentina's Yanina del Carmen Lescano. The fight, which was stopped near the end of the sixth round due to a severe cut above Lescano's left eye, showcased Ferreira's relentless pressure and superior skills.
Ferreira, who improved her professional record to 5-0 (2 KOs), also has her sights set on winning an Olympic gold medal in Paris later this year. "I'm really happy and really grateful," the newly crowned champion said after the fight. "The fight didn't turn out as planned, but I'm so happy to be a world champion, and I promise the next fight will be a lot more spectacular. Now, onto the gold medal in Paris."
In the early rounds, Lescano (14-4, 4 KOs) attempted to use her height and reach advantages, but Ferreira quickly made her presence felt, landing a solid right hand at the start of the second round. The Brazilian continued to force her way inside, unloading left hooks and keeping the exchanges at close quarters.
Ferreira's aggression began to take its toll on Lescano as the fast-paced encounter progressed. Ferreira asserted her dominance in the fourth round, firing shots from various angles and switching to a southpaw stance to find openings. Referee Howard Foster warned Ferreira for an unintentional low blow during this round.
Ferreira's onslaught continued in the fifth, jolting Lescano's head back with a right hand and a left hook. With 30 seconds remaining in the round, a right hand from Ferreira appeared to have Lescano in serious trouble. Still, the Argentine fighter hung on and fought back despite suffering a gruesome cut above her left eye from an accidental head clash.
Although Lescano survived a doctor's inspection at the start of the sixth round, the writing was on the wall. Ferreira continued to land heavy shots, and the blood flowing from Lescano's cut only worsened. After briefly allowing the action to continue, referee Howard Foster ended the fight compassionately, escorting a battered Lescano back to her corner.
The official stoppage came at 1:49 of the sixth round, but the judges' scorecards determined the outcome with the fight having gone past the fourth. Ferreira emerged as the clear winner, with two judges scoring the bout 59-55 and the third scoring it 58-55 in her favour.
Beatriz Ferreira's victory solidifies her status as a rising star in women's boxing and positions her as a strong contender for Olympic gold in Paris. With her relentless style, impressive skills, and unwavering determination, the Brazilian "Beast" is poised to significantly impact both the professional and amateur stages in the coming years.
