In a performance that will be discussed for years, Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez solidified his place among boxing's elite with a spectacular seventh-round knockout victory over the legendary Juan Francisco Estrada. The clash, saw Rodriguez capture the WBC junior bantamweight title for the second time in his career. Still, the manner of his victory left fans and pundits alike in awe.
From the opening bell, Rodriguez, the 24-year-old phenom from San Antonio, displayed a level of poise and skill that belied his years. He brought relentless pressure and power punching against Estrada, a fighter ten years his senior and a former two-division champion. Rodriguez's game plan was clear: keep Estrada off-balance and look for openings to unleash his devastating arsenal.
The fourth round provided the first major drama of the night. Rodriguez caught Estrada with a vicious uppercut, following it up with a three-punch combination that sent the Mexican veteran to the canvas. It was a moment of statement that announced to the boxing world that Rodriguez was not just here to compete but to dominate.
However, Estrada, ever the warrior, wasn't about to go quietly into the night. In the sixth round, he reminded everyone of his championship pedigree, landing a crisp right hand that dropped Rodriguez for the first time in his professional career. "That was crazy," Rodriguez would later say, reflecting on the novel experience of hitting the canvas. "I always wondered what it'd be like. Now I know, and I don't want it to happen again."
True to his word, Rodriguez immediately turned the tables on Estrada. The seventh round saw him unleash a furious assault, battering Estrada against the ropes before delivering the coup de grâce - a perfectly placed right hand to the liver that left Estrada rolling on the canvas in agony. The referee's count was a mere formality; the fight was over.
The stoppage was as decisive as it was impressive. Estrada, who had only been knocked out once before in his illustrious career, struggled to recall ever being hit with such force. "I know the mistakes I made," Estrada said post-fight, already eyeing a potential rematch. "What I need to do is to box more. I made errors. But no doubt, I'll win that rematch."
While the in-ring action was clear-cut, controversy arose when the scorecards at the time of stoppage were revealed. Despite Rodriguez's dominant performance, only one judge had him clearly ahead (58-54), with another scoring it even (56-56), and shockingly, the third had Estrada winning (57-56). Rodriguez was surprised at these scores, stating, "I thought I was dominating the whole fight. Even the round I got dropped in, I came back and finished that round pretty strong, so those scorecards were kind of shocking to me."
Eddie Hearn, Rodriguez's promoter, was more pointed in his criticism: "The Mexican judge gave 'Bam' two rounds, which is quite incredible out of six. It was a competitive fight, but Bam was dominating the fight."
Regardless of the scorecards, Rodriguez's victory speaks for itself. At just 24 years old, he has catapulted himself into the upper echelons of the sport.
