At The Star in Sydney, Australia, Janibek Alimkhanuly successfully defended his IBF and WBO titles against challenger Andrei Mikhailovich. The Kazakh champion secured a ninth-round TKO victory, but the fight raised questions about his future in the 160-pound division.
Alimkhanuly, who had previously withdrawn from a July bout due to weight-making difficulties, struggled with his size advantage throughout the contest. Despite this, he dominated from the opening bell, using his superior power and accuracy to punish the aggressive Mikhailovich repeatedly.
The second round nearly saw an early finish when Alimkhanuly landed several powerful left hands and an uppercut that visibly hurt Mikhailovich. The challenger was knocked down and stumbled upon rising, reminiscent of Zab Judah's famous moment against Kostya Tszyu. Only the bell saved Mikhailovich from a potential stoppage.
Throughout the middle rounds, Alimkhanuly continued to land heavy shots, including combinations in the sixth and seventh rounds that troubled Mikhailovich. However, the Russian-born, New Zealand-based fighter showed remarkable resilience, continuing to press forward and work at close range.
The end came in the ninth round when Alimkhanuly landed a perfectly timed counter left uppercut followed by another left that sent Mikhailovich reeling into the ropes. Referee Katsuhiko Nakamura stepped in to halt the contest at 2:45 of the round, with Mikhailovich struggling to defend himself after absorbing significant punishment.
At the time of the stoppage, the scorecards heavily favoured Alimkhanuly at 80-71, 80-71, and a surprisingly close 78-73. While the champion's victory was convincing, his performance against an overmatched opponent hinted at potential issues with making the middleweight limit, leaving questions about his future in the division.
