Fight Report
Antonio Vargas secured a dramatic 10th-round TKO victory over Winston Guerrero on Friday, capturing the WBA interim bantamweight title in a fight filled with knockdowns and relentless exchanges. Held in a packed Florida ballroom, the bout showcased the intensity and unpredictability that has long defined the bantamweight division.
The fight started at a fast pace, with Vargas wasting no time establishing his intent. In the first round, he sent Guerrero to the canvas with a sharp combination. Guerrero, undefeated in 22 previous contests, responded with fire in the second round, landing a series of punches culminating in a powerful right hand that floored Vargas. The early knockdown exchanges set the tone for an exciting contest.
Vargas regrouped quickly, mixing body shots and hooks to regain control in the subsequent rounds. Guerrero displayed his trademark resilience, returning fire with enough ferocity to keep the fight competitive, though Vargas consistently landed the cleaner, more telling punches. The fifth round was particularly telling, as Vargas stunned Guerrero with a series of rapid combinations, forcing the Nicaraguan fighter to fight defensively for stretches.
By the sixth, Vargas began targeting Guerrero’s body with thudding hooks while continuing to connect with sharp right hands to the head. Guerrero, known for his durability and aggressive style, attempted to rally in spots but struggled to keep up with Vargas’ work rate. The back-and-forth exchanges drew cheers from the crowd as both fighters displayed their determination.
The end came in the 10th round. Sensing an opportunity to close the show, Vargas pressed Guerrero to the ropes and unleashed a barrage of punches. Guerrero, overwhelmed and unable to respond, was pinned to the ropes as Vargas poured on relentless pressure. With Guerrero visibly dazed and offering no resistance, the referee stepped in to halt the fight, awarding Vargas the TKO victory.
The win improves Vargas’ record to 19-1 (11 KOs) and positions him as the mandatory challenger to WBA titleholder Seiya Tsutsumi. Reflecting on his performance, Vargas expressed his determination to unify the division, declaring, “All the champions are in Japan. My goal is to go there and bring all the belts back.”
For Guerrero, who suffered his first career loss, the fight highlighted his toughness but also exposed gaps in his ability to handle sustained pressure from a high-calibre opponent. Vargas’ performance, meanwhile, solidified his reputation as a fighter to watch in the bantamweight division and set the stage for potential high-stakes clashes with the division’s elite.
