Scott LeDoux

In the gritty world of heavyweight boxing, few fighters embodied the blue-collar spirit quite like Alan Scott LeDoux. Born on January 7, 1949, this Minnesota native carved out a reputation as a tenacious brawler who never shied away from taking on the biggest names in the sport during its golden era.

LeDoux's professional career lasted from 1974 to 1983, a period during which he stepped into the ring with a veritable who's who of heavyweight boxing. His debut knockout victory over Arthur Pullens set the stage for a career that would see him trade blows with legends like George Foreman, Larry Holmes, and Leon Spinks.

Known affectionately as the "Fighting Frenchman," LeDoux's most memorable moments often came in fights where he wasn't favoured to win. His draw against Leon Spinks, just months before Spinks shocked the world by defeating Muhammad Ali, stands as a testament to LeDoux's ability to punch above his weight class. Similarly, his late-round rally against Ken Norton, which nearly resulted in a knockout victory, showcased his never-say-die attitude and punching power.

LeDoux's career was marked by triumphs and controversies. One of his most infamous moments came after a loss to Johnny Boudreaux, when LeDoux, believing promoter Don King had fixed the fight, confronted broadcaster Howard Cosell. In the ensuing scuffle, LeDoux accidentally knocked off Cosell's toupee on live television, creating a moment of unscripted chaos that would be remembered long after the fight itself was forgotten.

Despite retiring with a record of 33-13-4 (22 KOs), LeDoux's willingness to take on all comers earned him respect within the boxing community. He shared the ring with future champions like Frank Bruno and Mike Weaver and even participated in a five-round exhibition with Muhammad Ali. His sparring sessions with Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis further cemented his status as a fighter's fighter.

LeDoux's impact on Minnesota boxing cannot be overstated. His 1976 bout against fellow Minnesotan Duane Bobick drew a state record crowd of 13,789, which still stands today. Fittingly, LeDoux was among the inaugural inductees into the Minnesota Boxing Hall of Fame in 2010, recognizing his contributions to the sport in his home state.

After hanging up his gloves, LeDoux remained involved in combat sports, working as a ringside commentator for ESPN and even trying his hand as a referee in professional wrestling. His post-boxing life also saw him dedicate time to charitable causes, serving on the board of directors for Wishes and More and as honorary chair of the American Cancer Society.

Tragically, LeDoux's final fight came outside the ring. Diagnosed with ALS in 2008, he faced this challenge with the same determination that characterized his boxing career. He passed away on August 11, 2011, leaving behind a legacy as a tough-as-nails competitor who always gave the fans their money's worth.

While LeDoux may not have reached the pinnacle of the heavyweight division, his willingness to take on all challengers and his memorable encounters with some of the sport's greatest names ensure that he'll be remembered as more than just a footnote in boxing history.
