Lennox Clarke

Lennox Clarke, known during his ring career by the moniker Dangerous, was a British super-middleweight contender who campaigned out of Halesowen in the West Midlands. Born in Birmingham on 15 July 1991, Clarke was an orthodox fighter standing at 5ft 10in who carved out a reputable professional career despite lacking a traditional amateur pedigree. Unlike many of his contemporaries who learned their trade in the unpaid ranks, Clarke transitioned to the professional code from the white-collar scene, a path that informed his reputation as a tough, aggressive pressure fighter. He made his professional debut on 16 November 2013 at the Town Hall in Walsall, stopping James Child via technical knockout in the second round. Over the course of an eight-year career, Clarke compiled a record of 20 wins, two losses, and one draw, with eight of his victories coming inside the distance.

The early years of Clarke’s career saw him build a solid foundation on the small hall circuit in the Midlands, claiming the vacant British Masters Bronze super-middleweight title in February 2015 with a points victory over the durable journeyman Dan Blackwell. He remained unbeaten through his first 16 contests, a run that included a draw against Karel Horejsek in May 2017. His first significant step up in class occurred in December 2017 at the Leicester Arena, where he faced Jahmaine Smyle for the IBO Continental super-middleweight title. Clarke secured a unanimous decision victory in that contest, scoring a knockdown in the ninth round to underline his dominance, with the judges scoring the bout 97–92 in his favour. This victory positioned him as a serious operator on the domestic scene, setting the stage for challenges at the British championship level.

Clarke’s first attempt at the prestigious Lonsdale Belt came in November 2019 against the highly skilled Lerrone Richards at the Arena Birmingham. The bout, contested for the Commonwealth and vacant British super-middleweight titles, was a clash of styles, with Clarke acting as the aggressor against Richards’ back-foot boxing. It resulted in the first defeat in Clarke's professional ledger, though he acquitted himself well in a split decision, with one judge favouring his work rate, 115–113. However, Clarke reached the pinnacle of his career on 27 March 2021 when he faced Willy Hutchinson at the Copper Box Arena in London. Hutchinson, a confident and highly touted prospect, entered the ring as a significant favourite, but Clarke upset the odds in dramatic fashion. Despite enduring sharp combinations early on, Clarke broke Hutchinson down, eventually trapping him and landing a decisive right hand over the top, followed by a left hook that forced referee Bob Williams to halt the contest at one minute and five seconds of the fifth round. The stoppage victory secured Clarke the British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles, marking the high-water mark of his time in the sport.

The reign as champion ended in his final professional appearance on 16 July 2022, when he defended his titles against Mark Heffron. In a bout described as explosive from the opening bell, Clarke found himself under heavy fire from Heffron, who landed accurate power shots throughout the early rounds. Although Clarke showed resilience and attempted to fire back, he was ultimately stopped in the fifth round. The end came after a left hook scrambled his senses, prompting the referee to intervene at two minutes and 28 seconds, a decision Clarke protested at the time, but which signalled the conclusion of his professional tenure. Following this defeat, Clarke became inactive and did not return to the prize ring.

In the years following his retirement from boxing, Clarke’s life took a troubled turn involving serious legal entanglements. In March 2025, the former champion appeared at Gloucester Crown Court, where he was sentenced to six years and four months in prison for supplying cocaine. The court heard that Clarke had been involved in supplying a Cheltenham-based drug dealer and had fled to Thailand in November 2023 to avoid arrest, only to be detained upon his return to the UK the following year. During sentencing, Judge Ian Lawrie KC noted that Clarke had viewed the illicit trade as an opportunity for "easy money," a grim postscript to a sporting career that had once seen him hold one of British boxing’s most historic titles.
