Born in Flint, Michigan, on October 2, 1990, DeAndre Savage spent much of his athletic formative years focusing not on boxing but on football. He played college football for two different teams, which cultivated his physical strength, competitive spirit, and ability to perform under pressure—all assets that would later serve him well in the ring. Yet, the journey from gridiron to boxing ring was not simply a matter of chance; Savage’s transition into pugilism began at age twenty-five, a decision stoked by family influences and aspirations uniquely shaped by his hometown’s challenges and legacy of struggle.

The path to professional boxing was unconventional and defined by rapid development. Savage began serious boxing training in 2016 and, by 2018, had already made significant headway in the amateur scene. He took second place in the National PAL tournament, advanced in the regional Golden Gloves competition, and campaigned at the USA National Championship tournament in Salt Lake City. Savage’s amateur reputation grew, albeit as a relatively new face in boxing compared to seasoned contemporaries. He approached the craft with urgency and a willingness to absorb and adapt to high-level instruction and sparring, often spending his time at Barry’s Boxing in Las Vegas, where he relocated for access to superior training and sparring partners. It was not long before established figures in the sport, including Floyd Mayweather Jr., acknowledged his potential. Mayweather personally greeted Savage at a public event, a gesture of recognition after Savage outperformed a Mayweather recruit in sparring—no small feat for an emerging heavyweight.

Family remained a strong motivational force, both as a source of inspiration and as a grounding influence. Savage’s older brother, Dion Savage Jr. (now Shujaa El-Amin), came under Mayweather’s guidance as a professional, while DeAndre’s upbringing in Flint—alongside collegiate and athletic successes among his siblings—instilled resilience in the face of adversity. The struggles he witnessed and endured in Flint became a motivating touchstone, something Savage would carry into the ring, determined to rise above his circumstances and craft a lasting legacy.

Savage’s professional debut arrived on July 11, 2021, in Tijuana, Mexico, against fellow debutant Cristian Memije Moreno, winning by first-round TKO. His initial contests showcased raw aggression paired with evolving technique—a combination that led to a succession of stoppages across his early fights. Whilst his opposition has been moderate in terms of win/loss ratio, these contests have been necessary for Savage’s learning curve.

Every one of Savage’s victories has come inside the distance, many in the opening rounds, creating a reputation as a fighter whose power and finishing instinct are his calling cards. He fought and won in venues throughout North and South America, including the WBA FedeCaribe heavyweight contest against Esteban Ramon Juarez in Buenos Aires, where Savage scored a third-round knockout. His earlier wins over Miguel Cubos and Marcos Ruiz Gomez in Mexico further demonstrated his readiness to fight internationally and his ability to dispatch opponents with authority. January 2025 saw him stop Eduardo Santana in just two rounds—a testament to both his punching ability and escalating ring composure as he advanced against more experienced opposition.

Outside of the competitive arena, Savage’s career reflects an appreciation for the realities that confront many fighters. His pragmatic approach to financial management—using earnings from training camps with high-profile boxers like Jake Paul to secure investments rather than fleeting luxuries—demonstrates uncommon foresight. In candid reflection, Savage credited his time as Paul’s sparring partner for helping him buy his first house, a milestone indicative of his commitment to building for the future, both inside and outside the ring.

Savage’s self-belief is fortified by his upbringing, training alongside champions and contenders, and weathering the challenges imposed by both his Flint roots and the cutthroat nature of the heavyweight division. Yet, his journey remains unfinished.
