The air inside the King's Hall in Belle Vue, Manchester, was thick with anticipation on the evening of 30th November 1964. Spectators from all over the UK, and indeed the world, had gathered to witness the WBC & WBA World Light-heavyweight Title fight featuring the reigning champion Willie Pastrano in his second title defence against Britain's own Terry Downes.

Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, Willie Pastrano entered the bout with a record of 61 wins, 12 losses, and 8 draws. His nimble footwork and crafty style had seen him reign supreme in many a contest. However, that evening in Manchester, he was not just fighting an opponent but an entire nation's hopes and dreams. Terry Downes, the Paddington-born Londoner, came into the bout with a record of 35 wins and 8 losses. A proud British fighter, Downes's aggressive approach contrasted sharply with Pastrano's more calculated style.

Both fighters had put in the work, with Pastrano weighing in at 174¾ lbs and Downes a tad lighter at 171 lbs. As they entered the ring, the tension was palpable. Crowd opinion was divided, but the British fans, always known for their vocal support, made sure their presence was felt.

The bout started with both fighters sizing each other up. Pastrano, known for his defensive prowess, moved around the ring with grace, evading Downes's attempts to corner him. Downes, on the other hand, was the aggressor, trying to land heavy blows and unsettle the champion. Round after round, the crowd was treated to a masterclass in boxing. The contrast in styles was evident; it was a classic matchup of a technical boxer versus a power puncher.

As the rounds progressed, Pastrano began to find his rhythm. His jabs were landing more frequently, and his evasive manoeuvres seemed to frustrate Downes. However, the British fighter's resilience was commendable. Each time he took a good shot, he would come back stronger, pushing Pastrano to the limits.

The atmosphere reached fever pitch by the 10th round. Both fighters had given their all, and it was Downes who looked on the verge of being victorious. However, in the 11th round, events saw Pastrano seize the moment. Landing a series of well-timed punches, he managed to corner Downes, twice dropping the British fighter who showed the heart of a lion, trying to weather the storm, but the referee, Andrew Smyth, seeing Downes in trouble, decided to step in, declaring Pastrano the winner by an 11th round TKO at 1:17 of the round.

The crowd was in awe. While the British fans were understandably disappointed, they couldn't help but appreciate the skill and tenacity of both fighters. Pastrano had successfully defended his WBC & WBA World Light-heavyweight Titles, but Downes had won the respect of many.
