Vito Antuofermo first defended his undisputed WBA and WBC Middleweight Titles on November 30, 1979, against Marvin Hagler in a co-main event at Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion in Las Vegas. The fight shared billing with the welterweight championship clash between Wilfred Benitez and Sugar Ray Leonard, creating a star-studded evening of boxing. Antuofermo, a relentless pressure fighter from Brooklyn by way of Italy, faced the highly skilled and determined Hagler, who entered as the challenger hungry for his first world title.

From the outset, Hagler showcased the polished boxing that had made him a rising contender. He controlled the early rounds by using his sharp southpaw jab and precise combinations, keeping Antuofermo at bay and opening cuts around his opponent's eyes. By the third round, a jab sliced the corner of Antuofermo's left eye, and a left uppercut added another gash to the same area in the fourth. Antuofermo's trademark forward march didn't waver, but the damage accumulated as Hagler landed crisp punches with alarming regularity.

By the mid-rounds, Antuofermo began to impose his will, charging forward with an unrelenting assault. His style turned the fight into a brawl, with both men trading punches at close range.
