Initially scheduled for September 29, 1984, the bout had been postponed due to promoter Murad Muhammad's failure to secure the promised purse money. With financial obstacles cleared, both fighters finally stepped into the ring in front of an expectant Puerto Rican crowd. Gómez, carrying the weight of national pride, tipped the scales at 125½ pounds, while Nelson, ever composed, came in slightly lighter at 125 pounds.

The opening rounds were evenly matched. While fighting on foreign soil, Nelson showed little hesitation, pressing Gómez and landing effective single shots. Nelson staggered the champion in the fourth round with a clean right hand, momentarily shaking Gómez. However, the Puerto Rican showed his championship experience, weathering the assault and regaining control in the subsequent rounds.

Gómez responded by exploiting Nelson's forward momentum, planting sharp left hooks on the challenger's face and repeatedly targeting his body with crisp combinations. In the aftermath, Gómez left the stadium without speaking to the media. His manager, Frank Parilla, suggested that the knockout resulted from Gómez's decision to engage Nelson in an outright slugfest in the eleventh round rather than continuing to box conservatively.
