Roberto Durán and Guts Ishimatsu met at the Gimnasio Nuevo Panamá in Panama City on September 8, 1973, with Durán defending the WBA World Lightweight Title. The champion, weighing in at approximately 133½ lb, held the clear technical edge throughout. The 22-year-old Durán attacked relentlessly from the opening bell, bringing pressure and precision to bear, while Ishimatsu, known also as Yuji Suzuki, absorbed the punishment with visible determination.

In the third round, Ishimatsu landed a sharp right uppercut that cut Durán’s eyebrow—a rare moment that hinted at an opportunity for the challenger. Still, Durán quickly regained control, his composure and forward movement restoring the momentum. In the fourth, referee Nicasio Lorenzo Drake penalised Ishimatsu two points for infractions while breaking, further weakening the Japanese contender’s prospects.

From the seventh round onward, Durán’s superiority grew markedly. His jab, sharp countering, and body work began to overwhelm Ishimatsu, whose responses grew slower and less coordinated as the rounds progressed. In the ninth round, Ishimatsu was floored twice under the champion’s onslaught, and in the tenth, Durán knocked him down three times. The referee halted the contest after two minutes and ten seconds of the tenth round, handing Durán a TKO victory and his third successful WBA lightweight title defence.

Durán earned US $60,000 for the bout, while Ishimatsu received US $10,000. The fight added to Durán’s growing reputation as a calculating, powerful fighter who combined aggression with technical skill. After the stoppage, Durán’s recorded mark stood at 38-1; this bout reaffirmed his standing as the leading figure in the lightweight division.
