The 3rd round was the only round where Ishimatsu looked like he had any chance of winning the bout, as he landed a surprise right uppercut on Duran that opened up a nasty cut on the champion's eyebrow. However, Duran quickly regained his composure and controlled the remainder of the fight.
Ishimatsu, who had a record of 25-10-5 going into the fight, was no match for the superior skills and power of Duran. The Japanese challenger showed plenty of heart, but he simply couldn't handle Duran's relentless pressure and punishing body shots.
Referee Nicasio Drake deducted two points from Ishimatsu in the 4th round for hitting Duran on the break while being separated. Despite the point deductions, Ishimatsu continued to fight on bravely, but he was outclassed by the champion.
The fight was held at the Gimnasio Nuevo Panama in Panama City, with a packed crowd of around 10,000 fans in attendance. Duran was guaranteed $60,000 for the fight, while Ishimatsu received $10,000.
With the victory, Duran improved his record to 38-1-0 and successfully defended his WBA World Lightweight Title for the third time.
