On Friday, May 27th, 1994, the MGM Grand's Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas hosted the matchup between Oscar De La Hoya and Giorgio Campanella. Promoted by Top Rank and aired on HBO World Championship Boxing, this fight saw De La Hoya defend his WBO World Super-featherweight Title for the first time since claiming the title.
In the opening round, both fighters showcased their skills, but Campanella caught De La Hoya with a powerful punch, sending him to the canvas for the first time in his career. De La Hoya, however, quickly recovered and managed to finish the round without further incidents.
In the second round, De La Hoya regained his composure and started to impose his will on Campanella. Demonstrating his superior boxing abilities, De La Hoya knocked Campanella down once, asserting control of the fight.
By the third round, De La Hoya's dominance was evident as he continued to land devastating punches on Campanella. Campanella went down again, visibly struggling to continue the fight.
With Campanella's corner recognizing their fighter's deteriorating condition, they decided to throw in the towel, signalling the end of the match. Referee Joe Cortez declared De La Hoya the winner by technical knockout (TKO) at 0:38 of the round.
