In what was unofficially Hagler's seventh world middleweight title defence, he faced the WBC No1 ranked and WBA No2 ranked contender Wilford Scypion in front of 13,101 fans at the Civic Center in Providence. After squabbling between the WBC & WBA over the WBC's newly created 12-round title fight distance, Hagler decided to go with the newly formed IBF whose title fight duration was 15 rounds.
It really didn't matter after 2:47 of the 4th round when Hagler caught Scypion with a sharp jab/left-hand combination that rocked the challenger badly. Scypion should have concentrated on defence but instead chose to march forward into the champion who gratefully accepted the invitation to counter Scypion's flailing hooks. The result was a knockout with referee Frank Cappuccino completing the ten count as Scypion rose to his feet.
