Mike McCallum vs David Braxton

On July 28, 1985, at the Tamiami Fairgrounds Auditorium in Miami, Florida, Mike McCallum made the second defence of his WBA World Super Welterweight Title. Promoted by Don King Productions and Felix Zabala Sr., the bout saw McCallum, undefeated at 24-0, face David Braxton, who brought an impressive 35-1 record into the contest. Both fighters weighed in at the division limit of 154 pounds, and the event was televised on NBC Sportsworld.

From the outset, McCallum established control, showcasing the precision and bodywork for which he had become known. Using his sharp jab and calculated combinations, he dictated the pace of the fight. Braxton, a capable and game challenger, tried to force the action but found himself repeatedly outmanoeuvred and countered by McCallum's superior technique.

As the rounds progressed, McCallum began to target Braxton's body more aggressively, slowing the challenger and limiting his offensive output. While Braxton remained determined, McCallum's skill and accuracy gradually broke him down. The defining moment came when a cut above Braxton's eye worsened, impairing his vision and making it increasingly difficult for him to defend himself effectively.

Referee Roberto Ramirez Sr. intervened to stop the contest, deeming Braxton unable to continue due to the severity of the cut. McCallum was declared the winner via technical knockout, improving his record to 25-0 and solidifying his hold on the WBA title. Braxton, suffering only the second loss of his career, displayed resilience but was ultimately outclassed by the champion.
