Mate Parlov vs Marvin Johnson

On December 2, 1978, Mate Parlov, the WBC World Light Heavyweight Champion, defended his title against Marvin Johnson at the Palazzo Dello Sport in Marsala, Sicily. The fight, promoted by J. Russell Peltz and broadcast on NBC SportsWorld, pitted Parlov, a Croatian Olympic gold medalist with a professional record of 22-1-1, against the relentless southpaw challenger from Indianapolis, Marvin Johnson, who held a record of 21-2-0. Both fighters made weight comfortably, with Parlov at 174¾ pounds and Johnson at 172¼ pounds.

From the opening bell, Johnson applied pressure, fighting with his signature aggressive style. Parlov, known for his technical skills and resilience, attempted to use his jab and movement to keep Johnson at bay. Despite his efforts, Johnson's constant forward momentum and punishing body work began to wear down the champion as the rounds progressed.

The mid-rounds saw Parlov struggle to maintain his rhythm. Johnson's attacks were relentless, targeting the body and head with thudding combinations.
