On Friday, September 17th, 1999, the Pakpanag Metropolian Stadium in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand hosted a world title fight for the WBC Flyweight Championship. The promoter of the fight was Sombhop Srisomvongse, and the boxers competing were Manny Pacquiao and Boonsai Sangsurat.
Manny Pacquiao was fighting out of the southpaw stance, while Boonsai Sangsurat was fighting out of the orthodox stance. At the time of the fight, Pacquiao was 20 years and 9 months old, and Sangsurat was 21 years and 3 months old.
Pacquiao had a strong record leading up to this fight, having won his first 10 professional bouts, including four by stoppage. However, in February of 1996, Pacquiao lost for the first time, a third-round TKO loss to Rustico Torrecampo in a 112-pound bout. This fight against Sangsurat was Pacquiao's 20th professional bout.
Pacquiao failed to make weight for the fight, resulting in him losing his WBC flyweight title. The title was only at stake for Sangsurat. Despite this setback, Pacquiao entered the ring looking to prove himself against the undefeated Sangsurat.
However, in the third round of the fight, Sangsurat delivered a powerful body shot to Pacquiao, resulting in a TKO victory for the Thai boxer. This loss was only Pacquiao's second in his professional career.
