Chavez Jr (44-0-1) was defending the WBC world middleweight title he had won from Germany's Sebastian Zbik in June 2011, for the second time at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas with 14,120 fans in attendance. His challenger, Marco Antonio Rubio (53-5-1) had lost in his only previous world title bid when he challenged Kelly Pavlic for the WBC and WBO world middleweight titles in February 2009.
The crowd got what they came for in this all-Mexican showdown. Chavez Jr and Rubio put on a great fight that had the fans out of their seats when the pair stood toe-to-toe and gave it all they had. However, Chavez Jr had a big weight advantage having struggled to make the 160lb weight limit but then re-hydrating to 181lbs on fight night. Rubio came into the fight at 171lbs and felt the advantage the champion held over him the whole way.
Chavez Jr came away with a unanimous points win and his title intact.
