On February 4, 2012, the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, played host to a highly anticipated all-Mexican showdown for the WBC World Middleweight Title. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the undefeated champion with a record of 44-0-1, faced off against the experienced Marco Antonio Rubio, who entered the ring with a 53-5-1 record. The bout, promoted by Top Rank and televised on HBO World Championship Boxing, drew a crowd of 14,120 passionate fans.

The fight was marred by controversy even before the first bell rang. Chavez Jr. had struggled to make the 160-pound weight limit, reportedly cutting 8 pounds in the final two days before the weigh-in. More significantly, he rehydrated to a staggering 181 pounds by fight night, while Rubio came in at a more modest 171 pounds. This substantial weight advantage for Chavez Jr would prove crucial to the bout's outcome.

As the fight unfolded, it became clear that Chavez Jr's size and strength overwhelmed Rubio. The champion consistently bullied his opponent, trapping him in corners and along the ropes to deliver punishing body shots. To his credit, Rubio fought valiantly and had his moments, particularly in the later rounds as Chavez Jr began to tire. The 11th and 12th rounds saw both fighters engage in electrifying exchanges, bringing the crowd to its feet.

After 12 gruelling rounds, the judges' scorecards reflected Chavez Jr's dominance, albeit with some disparity. Rick Crocker scored it 118-110, Duane Ford scored it 116-112, and Jack Woodburn saw it 115-113, all favouring the champion. The unanimous decision victory marked Chavez Jr's second successful defence of his WBC title, which he had won from Sebastian Zbik in June 2011.

Post-fight, Rubio voiced his frustrations about the weight disparity and lack of drug testing. He stated, "He re-gained a lot of weight. I re-gained my usual weight," and added, "I feel that he was very well protected. They didn't even do any testing, which should have been done". However, it was later revealed that the local Texas commission had failed to book a testing laboratory for the event in advance, affecting all fighters on the card.

Despite the controversy, the fight showcased Chavez Jr's ability to use his physical advantages effectively, even if questions remained about his discipline outside the ring. For Rubio, it marked another valiant effort in a world title fight following his previous unsuccessful attempt against Kelly Pavlik in 2009. While not without issues, the bout provided the fans with the action-packed, all-Mexican battle they had come to see.
