Julian Jackson and Herol Graham met with the vacant WBC World Middleweight title at stake on November 24th, 1990 at the Torrequebrada Hotel & Casino in Benalmadena, Andalucía, Spain' The fight was promoted by Barry Hearn. The referee for the match was Joe Cortez, and the bout was televised live in the UK by ITV.
Going into the bout, Jackson had a record of 40-1-0 and weighed in at 160lbs, while Graham had a record of 43-2-0 and also weighed in at 160lbs. The fight was expected to be a close contest, with both fighters having impressive records and being evenly matched in weight.
However, the bout was anything but close, as Graham dominated the first three rounds and was ahead on all scorecards. The ringside doctor told Jackson's corner at the end of the third round that if he did not show improvement in the fourth round, the bout would be stopped. Despite being in trouble, Jackson came out swinging in the fourth round, and with one devastating right hook, he knocked out Graham, who was unconscious before he hit the canvas.
The KO by Jackson was one of the most brutal and devastating in boxing history and is still regarded as one of the greatest KO's of all time. It was a remarkable comeback for Jackson, who was making a move up to the Middleweight division after having surgery to repair detached retinas in both eyes in 1989. His win over Graham secured his place in the middleweight division and solidified his reputation as one of the most powerful punchers in boxing history.
