On December 14, 1971, Jose Napoles successfully defended his unified welterweight titles with a unanimous decision over Hedgemon Lewis at the Forum in Inglewood. The bout, which shared top billing with the Ruben Olivares vs. Jesus Pimental bantamweight title fight, saw both champions earn $90,000 while challengers received $25,000.

The 145-pound champion's aggressive style and devastating body attack left Lewis visibly marked, and he built a substantial lead through six rounds. Lewis succeeded with his jab in the middle rounds, but Napoles reasserted control in the ninth. Though Lewis mounted a late surge from round thirteen, he needed a knockout that never materialized.

Official scorecards reflected the competitive nature: referee Rozadilla (8-6), judge Thomas (8-7), and judge Latka (9-4), all for Napoles. Press scorecards varied, with AP seeing it 8-5 Napoles, Press-Telegram 9-4 Napoles, while the Pasadena Star-News scored it even.

Post-fight, Napoles, in his 76th professional bout and first defence of his second title reign, dismissed Lewis's effectiveness, claiming he "never was hurt" despite acknowledging some successful jabs that caused a cut. Lewis contested the decision, arguing he landed more punches despite Napoles hitting harder. The champion's win continued his successful run after he regained the titles from Billy Backus.
