The fight
On January 1, 1907, at the Casino A.C. Arena in Tonopah, Nevada, Joe Gans defended his World Lightweight Title against Kid Herman. Promoted by Larry Sullivan, a well-known figure in early 20th-century boxing promotion, the event drew significant attention as Gans returned to the ring following his victory over Battling Nelson the previous July. Gans, weighing 132 pounds, faced Herman, who weighed in at 133 pounds. The bout was officiated by referee Jack Welsh.
Gans, known as the "Old Master," showcased his superior boxing skills throughout the match. He maintained control over the bout, utilizing his defensive prowess and precise counterpunching to neutralize Herman's offensive efforts. In the eighth round, Gans delivered a decisive right hand to Herman's head, resulting in a knockout that secured his victory and retained his title.
This fight marked Gans' first return to the ring following his gruelling encounter with Battling Nelson on July 4, 1906. His performance against Herman further solidified his reputation as one of the greatest lightweight boxers in history.
