Joe Brown and Wallace Bud Smith meet for the third time in the space of nine months. Their first fight was a 10 round non-title decision win for Brown, then as challenger for Smith's World Lightweight Title, Brown won the crown by split decision in New Orleans. Smith was down twice in the 14th round.

Brown proved his dominance over Smith in his first title defence when the ringside doctor waved the fight off in the interval after the 10th round. Smith complained that he had been unable to see properly from his left eye after a blow in the 4th round. He also had a cut inside his mouth.

Joe 'Old Bones' Brown went on to make eleven successful defences of the World Lightweight Title.
