Oscar De La Hoya made the sixth defence of his WBC World Welterweight Title at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas against former WBA titleholder Ike 'Bazooka' Quartey who hailed from Accra, Ghana. Quartey had made seven defences of his world title and was seen as a big threat to 'The Golden Boy' as De La Hoya was known after his Olympic gold medal-winning success.

Quartey gave up his title to get the fight with De La Hoya, but his final defence against Mexican Jose Luis Lopez saw the Ghanian taken to a majority decision draw that included two Quartey knockdowns, one in the 2nd round and again in the 11th leading many to question whether his punch resistance was waining.

All doubts were put to rest when the pair met and provided the crowd at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas with a great fight that saw De La Hoya down in the 6th round and Quartey in the 6th and 12th rounds. After 12 rounds, two of the ringside judges found in De La Hoya's favour.

Scores: John Keane 116-113 | Ken Morita 116-112 | Larry O'Connell 114-115.
