On September 26, 1998, at the Sports Village in Norwich, Norfolk, United Kingdom, WBO Heavyweight Champion Herbie Hide (30-1-0, 220 lbs) defended his title against German challenger Willi Fischer (21-1-1, 231 lbs). The fight, promoted by Sports Network and televised on Sky Sports, was refereed by Joe Cortez.
Fischer, a 1992 Olympian from Frankfurt, Germany, had a respectable professional record. His only loss came against fellow German Kim Weber in 1996. Hide, making the second defence of the title he won in a vacant match against seasoned veteran Tony "TNT" Tucker, was looking to continue his reign as WBO champion.
The bout ended abruptly in the second round when Fischer was knocked down three times. Referee Joe Cortez invoked the three-knockdown rule and stopped the fight at 1:04 of the round, giving Hide the victory by technical knockout.
