The fight
On November 20, 1982, Dwight Muhammad Qawi made the third defence of his WBC and Ring magazine light heavyweight titles against Eddie Davis, a 31-year-old challenger from Dillon, South Carolina.
Davis came into the biggest night of his career with a record of 23 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, with 15 of those wins coming by knockout. Davis had risen through the ranks with notable victories, including a knockout win over Murray Sutherland in his most recent outing. His only losses were to Marvin Johnson and Pete McIntyre.
Dwight Muhammad Qawi, the reigning champion, was on a 17-fight win streak with a 55% knockout rate. Qawi had recently defended his title against Jerry Martin and in a rematch with the man he took the title from, Matthew Saad muhammad and was looking to continue his dominance in the light heavyweight division.
The fight began with Qawi asserting his power early, knocking Davis down for an 8-count in the first round. Despite this early setback, Davis recovered and engaged Qawi in a fierce, toe-to-toe battle. The fight remained competitive until the ninth round when Qawi began to take control.
By the end of the tenth round, Davis appeared exhausted and slowly rose from his stool for the eleventh round. Qawi capitalized on Davis's fatigue, immediately attacking him with a left-right-left combination that sent Davis backwards. Another combination followed, putting Davis down again. Although Davis managed to stagger to his feet, referee Tony Perez stopped the fight just 20 seconds into the eleventh round, declaring Qawi the winner by TKO.
