People forget how strange that WBC light-heavyweight title picture was in early 1989. Sugar Ray Leonard pinched the belt off Donny Lalonde, then vacated it almost as soon as he’d got his hands on it, and suddenly you’ve got Dennis Andries, the Hackney Rock, back in the mix in Tucson against an unbeaten American prospect most British fans couldn’t have picked out of a police line-up.

Andries had a lot riding on it that night, even if the belt was “vacant” on paper. After Hearns had put him through the floor in Detroit, plenty wrote him off as nothing more than a tough bloke who’d had his moment. The smart move he made was going to America, taking the hard fights, and rebuilding properly, including that tight win over Bobby Czyz that put him back on the title road.

Tony Willis came in 16-0, strong, confident, and probably expecting the older man to fade once he’d had to work at a real pace. Instead, Andries dragged him into the sort of fight he hated, a grown-man light-heavyweight fight where you’re made to punch under pressure and you’re not allowed to rest behind a jab. He wasn’t flashy, and Andries never was, but he was cleverer than people gave him credit for, nudging you off balance, walking you down, making the exchanges happen on his terms. By the fifth, Willis had been ground down, and the stoppage came, Andries taking the title again while most of Britain slept.
