The fight

The April 29, 2006, vacant WBO lightweight title bout between Acelino Freitas and Zahir Raheem at Foxwoods Resort devolved into a tactical stalemate characterized by awkward exchanges and frequent clinches. Freitas's split decision victory proved as contentious as the fight was ungainly.

The judges' divergent scoring reflected the bout's difficult-to-score nature - Glenn Feldman saw it widely for Freitas at 116-112, Clark Sammartino favored Raheem 115-113, while Steve Weisfeld's 115-113 card for Freitas proved decisive. Referee Steve Smoger spent much of the evening separating the fighters from clinches, resulting in both men's reluctance to engage at proper boxing range.

The fight's pattern emerged early and remained consistent throughout - Raheem's reach advantage forced Freitas to attack from an excessive distance, resulting in wild misses. At the same time, Raheem limited himself primarily to double jabs without sustained follow-up. A few head clashes occurred, though neither fighter was cut. The eleventh round saw both men land their cleanest shots of the fight, but characteristic of the overall contest, neither capitalized on their momentary success.

For Freitas, the victory secured another world title belt but did little to enhance his reputation, as the performance suggested vulnerability against the division's elite. Raheem's tactical approach, while frustrating Freitas's offence, ultimately proved insufficient to sway enough judges in his favour.

The bout's tepid nature was particularly notable given both fighters' previous involvement in more dramatic contests. The style clash and mutual caution produced what observers deemed one of the less memorable lightweight title fights of the era.
